As mentioned before, the new edition of ISO/IEC 20000-1, the international standard for service management, will be released this month. The ISO committee that is responsible for developing this standard is, however, not leaning back and relaxing, as there is more work being done!

The ISO/IEC 20000 series of standards has a couple of parts that are correlations and mappings to other service management frameworks. These are Part 11 – 20000 vs. ITIL®, Part 12 – 20000 vs. CMMI®-SVC, and Part 13 – 20000 vs. COBIT®.

ISO/IEC 20000-11 (Part 11) is called Guidance on the relationship between ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 and service management frameworks: ITIL. It provides guidance on the relationship between ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 and ITIL 2011. It shows how using ITIL can support demonstrating conformity to the requirements of ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 and includes an extensive mapping between chapters in ITIL 2011 and clauses in ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011. Furthermore, terminology between the two frameworks is compared. Note that this standard is based on the previous version of ISO/IEC 20000-1 and that ITIL 2011 will be succeeded by ITIL 4 in 2019. It is therefore likely that ISO/IEC 20000-11 will be updated as soon as ITIL 4 has been published. The current edition of ISO/IEC 20000-11 is is available from this website.

ISO/IEC 20000-12 (Part 12) is called Guidance on the relationship between ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 and service management frameworks: CMMI-SVC. It provides guidance on the relationship between ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 and CMMI-SVC v1.3. It shows how using CMMI-SVC can support demonstrating conformity to the requirements of ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011 and includes an extensive mapping between chapters in CMMI-SVC and clauses in ISO/IEC 20000-1:2011. Furthermore, terminology between the two frameworks is compared. As with the previous standard, now that ISO/IEC 20000-1 has been updated, Part 12 will be updated accordingly. Note also that CMMI-DEV has been updated to version 2.0 now and likely CMMI-SVC will follow soon, which is another reason to update this standard. The current edition of ISO/IEC 20000-12 is freely available from the ISO website.

ISO/IEC 20000-13 (Part 13) is a new standard on which work has only just started. It will be called Guidance on the relationship between ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 and service management frameworks: COBIT. It will provide guidance on the relationship between ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 and COBIT 5. It will show how using COBIT 5 can support demonstrating conformity to the requirements of ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 and include an extensive mapping between chapters in COBIT 5 and clauses in ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018. Furthermore, terminology between the two frameworks will be compared. It is likely to be published late 2019 or early 2020.

Dolf van der Haven is the author of A Guide to ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 Service Management, which will be released in September by ITSM Press in both English and Spanish.
