IT Service Management

IT service management (ITSM) is a set of processes and functions that are used to align IT with organisational objectives and deliver value. Also known as service management, ITSM focuses on delivering IT services that are focused on the end user and that deliver the correct levels of utility (fitness for purpose) and warranty (fitness for use).

ITSM Frameworks

There are many different frameworks and standards for IT service management, but the best known are as follows:

  • ITIL – the most commonly used approach to service management.
  • ISO/IEC 20000 – the International Standard for implementing a service management system.
  • Business Process Framework eTom – a framework for business service providers.
  • FitSM – a framework for ‘light’ service management.
